Factors and Hazards of Infant Development Essay Example for Free

Factors and Hazards of Infant Development Essay Factors and Hazards of Infant Development By Miranda Brueggeman EC100/EEC1700 Section 05 Foundations of Child Development Winter 2013 There are many factors and hazards that influence the development of babies before they are even born. In this essay I will only be discussing three that I feel are essential for parents to understand. The three I will be talking about are as follows: Limiting exposure to any and all teratogens such as drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and environmental chemicals; Consuming a nutritious diet; and The importance of obtaining early prenatal care. Women should avoid unnecessary contact with known teratogens when they are thinking about getting pregnant or already are pregnant. Several factors can influence a teratogen’s harmful effect on fetal development, including the amount of exposure, fetal age, and genetic makeup of the mother and fetus (Developmental Profiles, 2012, p. 80). Mothers who consume alcohol during pregnancy have a greater risk of miscarriages, stillbirths, premature infants, and low birth weight infants (Developmental Profiles, 2012, p. 80). No amount of alcohol is considered safe to consume during pregnancy (Developmental Profiles, 2012, p. 1). Mothers who smoke during pregnancy are more likely to experience miscarriage, premature births, stillborn infants, and low birth weight infants (Developmental Profiles, 2012, p. 81). Substances known to have a negative effect on the developing fetus range from prescription and nonprescription medications to pesticides, fertilizers, and street drugs. It is very important that both parents are fully aware of these facts and that they do their best to avoid any and all teratogens before, during, and after pregnancy. Depending what the mother eats before and during pregnancy has a significant effect on her health as well as the developing fetus. Consuming a healthy diet lessens the risk of having a low birth weight or premature infant (Developmental Profiles, 2012, p. 75). During the Live Lecture this week I heard that it is a good idea to take Folic Acid three months prior to getting pregnant because it can help prevent certain birth defects. Nutrition is definitely very important for the mother and baby. In China both mother and father will cleanse their bodies for an entire year before even trying to get pregnant! Another thing to remember is that babies need a lot of the essential vitamins and minerals and the mother should take some sort of prenatal vitamins to have enough nutrients for her own body to stay healthy. Medically supervised prenatal care is critical for ensuring the development of a healthy infant (Developmental Profiles, 2012, p. 74). A lack of prenatal care is often associated with an increased rate of medical complications, preterm births, low birth weight infants, fetal death, and disabilities (Developmental Profiles, 2012, p. 74). Parents who have pre-existing diseases or are on medications of any kind need to speak with their doctor before trying to get pregnant. Some medications are very bad for fetal development. I myself have rheumatoid arthritis along with anxiety and depression and I will need to seek a medical professional for advice before trying to get pregnant. Another reason why you should see a doctor before/during pregnancy is because they can give you a list of certain things you need to avoid or things you should and should not do for a safe and healthy pregnancy/baby. In conclusion, even though there are other factors and hazards to consider before/during pregnancy these three are a great start to having a healthy baby. The best thing you can do for your future baby is seek out a medical professional right away because they can tell you all about the do’s and don’ts and help you along your journey into parenthood. Chicago Hope :: essays research papers

Chicago Hope, David E. Kelly’s infamous doctor-drama, premiered on September 18, 1994. Six years later, the show was canceled after its final season’s finale, which aired on May 4, 2000. Even though â€Å"Hope† couldn’t beat its direct competitor ER in the ratings race, the show still had a lot of good things going for it. Chicago Hope was nominated for a myriad of highly prestigious awards during its run. Many of these awards were lost to ER and other dramas but leading-lady Christina Lahti did receive both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her performances on the show. Critic Mark Harris, even when as far as saying, â€Å"Lahti is, no question, the best dramatic actress in prime time.† (Entertainment Weekly, Oct. 4, 1996 p.51) Also, Hector Elizondo received an Emmy for his supporting role and people involved in off screen production won multiple awards. Chicago Hope was loved by critics even when being directly compared to ER. Chicago Hope was basically CBS’s answer to ER; a drama about doctors, taking place in a teaching hospital in Chicago, that aired on Thursdays at ten. The cast was constantly changing due to the constant ratings battle CBS was waging against NBC. Behind the scenes, CBS put its money on Executive Producer/Writer David E. Kelly who, at the time, was just coming off a successful run with Picket Fences; while NBC also went with a big name Producer/Writer/Novelist in Michael Crichton. Also, â€Å"Hope† used numerous directors and guest directors over the course of its six-year run, keeping the show fresh. Aside from the battle with ER and the constantly changing staff, this show definitely met or exceeded all of the requirements for a â€Å"quality TV† series outlined by Professor Robert J. Thompson in his book Television’s Second Golden Age. Chicago Hope was not your everyday TV escape. It was a show that made the viewer actually think about what was going on in both the show and the real world. It brought up issues that actually affected the lives of the people watching. It dealt with controversial issues like death, birth control, and AIDS. In the words of critic Ken Tucker, â€Å"†¦in a fall season with little quality [this is a] solid drama.† (Entertainment Weekly, Sept. 23, 1994 p. 52) Furthermore, â€Å"Hope† was the brainchild of Producer David E. Kelly, which, before the premiere even aired, meant that it was of high quality.

Language and Arthur Millers skills as a dramatist Essay

â€Å"A view from the bridge† is a two-act tragic play by Arthur Miller in the mid 50s. This play puts light on the working American-Sicilian population, in particular the Carbone family, the head of which is Eddie Carbone. In this essay I will be analysing Eddie Carbone’s character whilst occasionally making comments on the language and Arthur Miller’s skills as a dramatist. Eddie is a simple, straight forward man that lives with his beloved wife and niece. Alfieri describes Eddie as a â€Å"long shore man†. He is very protective over his orphaned niece, Catherine. Arthur Miller uses informal language to show Eddie’s social class. It is worthy to note that Arthur Miller was skilfully able to come down to the status of long shore man and was able to produce speech successfully in their tone and language. Eddie is portrayed as generous, but at the same time selfish and self-protective. This is since, although he is generous to offer his home to two of his wife’s cousins, Marco and Rodolfo, he believes he is Superior. This is shown as he reminds Beatrice not to offer them his bed and he is very jealous of anyone that gets too close to Catherine. This jealousy also adds to his hardship in accepting Rodolfo and Catherine’s relationship, another reason to this envy is his over-protective nature. He has brought up Catherine as his own daughter and feels afraid to let her grow up, so he cannot face her having any relation to other men. Eddie’s wife, Beatrice’s is unhappy with Eddie’s attitude towards Catherine, which soon starts to create a rift between the couple. â€Å"It’s been many days and nights since you haven’t slept with me†; shows that Eddie has been so caught up in Catherine and making sure she does not fall for Rodolpho, that he begins to forget about his duties as a husband. Further into the play, Eddie begins to feel another emotion towards Catherine: sexual attraction. This is shown by many things which happen throughout the play. He quickly begins to feel extremely jealous of the immediate impression Rodolfo makes on Catherine. The stage directions state at a point, â€Å"He looks at [Catherine] like a lost boy†, when she reveals her feeling for Rodolfo to him, but he is unable to admit it to everybody else. Furthermore, Eddie becomes so obsessed with Catherine, that he has no control over his emotions; for example Catherine begins to like Rodolpho, Eddie cannot control himself and has to find a way to vent his anger, so He decides to hurt Rodolpho, by using an exercise of teaching him to box,:†you ever do any boxing†? Eddie, at this point, feels so remorseless, that even when Rodolpho refuses to hit him, â€Å"I don’t want to hit you Eddie,† he stills feels like the need to hit him, showing how obsessed he is. Moreover, Eddie becomes too interested into the relationship between Catherine and Rodolpho, that he involves the Immigration Bureau, this is because he could not spilt the true love apart. In the eyes of the audience and the other characters, it causes Eddie’s remaining honours to be thrown in the dirt. As in any community, even though there may be accused, the government should not be called in, otherwise the one, who spread the word, shall not be respected by all others and therefore, he becomes an out-cast. His redemption occurs towards the end of the play. His honour is restored with his own death. This is as he fights with Marco and ultimately dies, but he accepts his fate, and therefore restoring his respect and honour. In this part of the play, he also shows how he had planned the fight and was so obsessed that he brought a knife and fought like a coward. This brought his redeemed respect again to an all time low. Society respects a man, who acts like a man, and Eddie in this part, fights like a coward, which is unacceptable in the society. In conclusion, Eddie, although being a real man at the start, ends his life in a shameful and cowardly way. In my analysis, I have shown how Arthur Miller portrays this in an effective and skilful way, which shows his brilliant ability as a writer. I feel that ‘A View from the Bridge’ is a very high-quality book with a interesting and deep story, giving it full marks in my view.

Howard Gardner And His Theory Of Multiple Intelligences Education Essay

Howard Gardner, born on July 11th, 1943, is one of modern twenty-four hours ‘s greatest psychologists. ( Smith ) He was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania to parents who escaped from Germany because they were Jewish. ( Winner ) The holocaust was an influential factor in his life. ( Gardner ) Another great influence in his life is the decease of his brother Eric, although his parents seldom talked about the affair, it significantly impacted his thought and development. ( Smith ) In other words, his household and equal greatly shaped who he became today. ( Myers 118 ) He was a superb immature kid, who ended up traveling to Harvard University with a grade in Law but his involvement in psychological science and the societal scientific disciplines grew. ( Gardner ) Finally he developed his theory of Multiple Intelligence in 1983 in his book Frames of Mind: theory of multiple intelligences. ( Gardner ) During that clip period psychological science was progressively popular. For illustrat ion, a outstanding field during the 80 ‘s and 90 ‘s is cultural psychological science which assumes the thought that civilization and head are inseparable. ( â€Å" Cultural Psychology † ) Besides that clip period contained a batch of economic, societal and general alteration which makes his new thought more acceptable. More significantly the fact that he is American agencies that he grew up in a free thought society so he can take from what he learned and transforms it into what he believes is true so base on balls on his sentiments. Three other psychologists who influenced him greatly are Jean Piaget, Jerome Bruner and Nelson Goodman. ( Gardner 3 of 7 ) Jean Piaget who deals with the nature of cognition and how worlds can bit by bit to obtain it, make it, and utilize it. Besides, Jerome Bruner contributed to cognitive psychological science and cognitive acquisition theory in educational psychological science. Goodman dealt with inductive concluding based on human wont. ( Gardner 3 of 7 ) The three of them goes along with Gardner ‘s statement of how kids learn cognition. Besides their plants caused Gardner to go more interested in societal scientific discipline. Waldorf instruction developed in the early 1900s by Rudolf Steiner was similar to Gardner ‘s thoughts. ( Why Waldorf Works ) It was about incorporating practical, artistic and conceptual elements into larning. This instruction emphasizes imaginativeness and creativeness so that pupils can develop into free, morally responsible and incorporate persons. The first Waldorf School was opened in Germany in 1919 and now there are many schools get downing to utilize methods of Waldorf instruction. ( Why Waldorf Works ) Last an thought credited to be developed by Jerome Bruner in the 1960 ‘s is find larning which promoted custodies on tilting where scholars draw from his or her ain experience and anterior cognition. ( â€Å" Discovery Learning ( Bruner ) † ) So there were many factors that influenced his thought and that pushed him to develop his theory. His theory trades with how worlds have many different ways to larn and treat information. ( â€Å" Howard Gardner ‘s Multiple Intelligences theory † ) He believes that everyone has different degrees of intelligence in each class which is why some kids learn some things faster than others. Gardner believes that intelligence is normally defined by psychometries but it does non adequately describe people ‘s broad mixture of cognitive abilities. IQ trials can sometimes be taken excessively earnestly but it can non find future success ( Gardner 3 ) . Even college aptitude trials are â€Å" thinly cloaked intelligence trials. † ( Myer 432 ) For illustration a kid that takes longer to larn generation does non intend the kid is dense but that the kid is more intelligent in other countries. In the facet of instruction, Gardner wants to prioritise because he believes the cognition we learn is superficial, â€Å" a stat mi broad an inch deep † . ( Guignon ) He r ecognizes that â€Å" Students learn in ways that are identifiably typical † so he promotes more pupil centered as opposed to teacher centered larning which is a really practical thought. Harmonizing to Garner, there are 8 perchance 10 intelligences ; spacial, lingual, logical, bodily, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and realistic. Spatial is the ability to visualise with the head ‘s oculus. ( Chapman ) Linguistic intelligence trades with words, spoken or written. These people learn best by reading, taking notes, listening to talks, and treatment. ( Chapman ) Logical-mathematical is about logic, abstractions, concluding, and Numberss, concluding capablenesss scientific thought and probe traditional constructs of â€Å" intelligence † or IQ. ( Chapman ) Bodily-kinesthetic is the control of one ‘s bodily gestures and the capacity to manage objects skilfully. Musical intelligence trades with sounds, beat, tones, and music sing, play musical instruments. ( Lane ) Interpersonal intelligence is about interaction with others. They are largely extraverts, characterized by their sensitiveness to others ‘ tempers, feelings, dispositions and motiv es and collaborate good with others. ( Lane ) Intrapersonal is the introverted and self-reflective capacities. Those people are introverted but good at decoding their ain feelings and motives. ( Lane ) Lastly is realistic who deals a batch with nature associating information to one ‘s natural milieus. The 9th intelligence is non to the full confirmed yet but it is experiential which is about contemplating phenomena or inquiries beyond centripetal informations. And eventually, the ten percent is moral intelligences covering with moralss and the value of life. ( Chapman ) His theory greatly changed the heads of many and started the development of more across-the-board schools. Traditionally, schools have highlighted the development of logical and lingual intelligence but many pupils do non larn good in that environment. ( Lane ) Gardner ‘s theory argues that pupils will be better served by a wider vision of instruction, wherein instructors use different methods to learn all pupils non merely the few that are intelligent logically or linguistically. ( Guignon ) Although, many instructors see the theory as simple common sense and some even say they already know that pupil learn in different ways, Gardner ‘s system has non been accepted by most faculty members instructions. ( Guignon ) Some schools nevertheless, have developed to better fit Gardner ‘s thoughts. For illustration, one of the most celebrated schools that implement Gardner ‘s theory is the New City School in St. Louis, Missouri. This school has been utilizing the theo ry since 1988 ( â€Å" Why New City School † ) There has been much unfavorable judgment for his theory though. Some say he uses the word intelligence in topographic point of ability. ( Gilman ) Others say that he has non settled on a individual definition of intelligence though he admits himself that he has no fixed definition. ( Gilman ) Last and most significantly, he has no empirical grounds for this theory. ( Smith ) In fact, some neurological research disproves his theory and his old plants has major defects. ( Smith ) Recently, the current No Child Left Behind act passed by the Bush disposal does non embrace his theory at all because the Act is about holding pupils all pass standardized trials while he wants to acquire rid of those trials in order to make out to every kid ‘s demands. ( â€Å" No Child Left Behind Act ( NCLB ) | ESEA † ) His theory affects us so much today because it relates to instruction ; Gardner goes into how schools merely teach superficial cognition significance schools teach a batch of everything but non in deepness into anything so some childs may stand out in one country but non the other. ( Gardner ) There is excessively much shoal cognition so he suggests that kids should larn and really understand constructs non merely larn for taking a trial. ( Smith ) If he obtains more support for his theory, the whole instruction system will hold to be changed. But his thought of an instruction system should work good because this will assist do the instruction system m ore just and embracing for all childs. Right now, some kids that may look like they are neglecting school but their failure is non because they are dense but because the manner topics are taught in school is non how he or she can grok and use. ( Gardner ) Even though Gardner ‘s theory is appealing, it will likely non work because there is no widespread support particularly from authorities. ( No Child Left Behind Act ( NCLB ) | ESEA ) Besides, single instructors particularly in lower classs have unconsciously adapted parts of his theories but because in higher classs there is more lecture manner instruction, his theory seldom applied to higher instruction. ( Guignon ) Furthermore there is so much contention over this theory because it keeps on altering and there is no cogent evidence which makes it difficult to wholly believe this theory. ( Smith ) Additionally, since Gardner is still alive, he can maintain on altering his theory and acquiring more grounds and support. ( Gardner ) Lastly, some schools have already adapted his theory such as the New metropolis school. This school published many books about implementing this theory in more schoolrooms such as the school ‘s instructors have produced two books for instructors, Observing Multiple Intelligences and Succeeding With Multiple Intelligences and the principal, Thomas Hoerr, has written Becoming a Multiple Intelligences School in add-on to many articles on the practical applications of the theory. ( â€Å" Multiple Intelligences Resources ) The school has besides hosted four conferences, each pulling over pedagogues from around the universe. ( â€Å" Why New City School † ) The school remains a valuable resource for instructors interested in put to deathing the theory in their ain schoolrooms. It is clear that Howard Gardner has had an of import impact on today ‘s psychological science universe and instruction. His continuity to â€Å" dispute an educational system that assumes that everyone can larn the same stuffs in the same manner † has decidedly made an impact in the universe as many schools have recognized the different ways kids learn. ( Lane ) Should his theory go more prevailing, who knows what out instruction system will be like in the hereafter.

Practical Hints on Writing Online Discussion Posts

Practical Hints on Writing Online Discussion Posts Basic Notions for the Discussion Board Post Writing If you are a newcomer to the world of online courses and eager to gain your first online learning experience, the first thought that crosses your mind is What is pivotal in online studying? A seasoned student will give you a sound piece of advice to consider online discussion posts, which are also known as the discussion board, to be of the utmost importance. Nonetheless, the discussion board post writing is not petrifying and could be a piece of cake if done properly. The first thing you need to remember is that a discussion board is not the place where you can only get your course requirements. It is specially developed as the channel of communication with your professors and classmates. What is more, that is the exact place where you should seek help and share information on the course. That is why it is strongly advised to make your own posts and participate in other discussions in order to ace the course and to be (or at least to make an impression of) a diligent student. Steps to Follow While Writing Discussion Posts Consider the purpose of writing. Get prepared. Look through the posting directions. Take a stand on the point. Search for supporting evidence. Compile your response. Publish your post on time. Step 1: Consider the purpose of discussion posts writing During the classes, both students and professors have an opportunity to participate in the discussion about the subject and present their points of view. As it was already mentioned above, writing discussion posts substitutes for this participation in online courses. The only difference is that you use your fingers and keyboard instead of your voice! Summarizing this point, you need to keep the language and tone conversational. Post, respond, and facilitate other discussions! Step 2: Get prepared There is no point in presenting some nonsense if you were supposed to conduct research, fulfill any assignment, or read any related information. No one is interested in wasting their time on reading a post with a half-baked idea behind it. Make sure to double-check each and every word or thought you are about to post. Step 3: Look through the posting directions What are the directives? Is it about presenting your personal attitude, res tating the ideas already mentioned, or something else? Pay attention to the related posts before compiling your own one. Step 4: Mind the point. Is there something you want to present or just share with your fellows and professors? Mind the relevance of your point and narrow down the topic. Imprint on your memory the magnitude of the balance and interconnection of the ideas and theories, as well as real life examples. You can ask your professor to clarify any confusing points, but make sure to do it in advance. Step 5: Search for supporting evidence. Remember no evidence, no case. The backup documentation is number 1 requirement for presenting any point. Frankly speaking, it does not matter where you have taken this data from the news, the latest research, your real life situation, or course material. The source is of no importance as long as it is credible. While preparing for the discussion, jot down any valuable piece of information in order to be able to find necessary statist ics but not to rack your brain, trying to recollect it. It goes without saying that your post needs references. Bear in mind to cite properly. Plagiarism is always plagiarism, so make sure to give credits to those people, who compiled the works you are using. Just mention the author/researcher, title, and date. Step 6: Compile your response Hopefully, there is no need to highlight the importance of writing a coherent post, which is logically divided into paragraphs. You may also use the bullet points or a list if necessary. Use word processing software while writing. Moreover, mind to use the spell checker and the preview mode after finishing the post. Later you will only need to copy and paste the post to the discussion board. Follow the rules stated in the syllabus requirements or course introduction. If you need to respond to another post, do it wisely and properly. Opt for posting to make a response, imagining the same situation in the class environment. Would you respond to the same statement if it was made in the live discussion? If you answer positively, then you can move on to writing a discussion board response. If you answer negatively, leave this post and look for another one until you find the one that interests you. Brevity is the soul of wit until it explains your point to the audience. The answers I agree (with XXX) or Interesting are not answers. Make sure to explain why you agree. In addition, there is nothing wrong if you disagree with your classmates position. Just do it politely and support you claim with solid evidence. Theory and practice are not parallel lines, they need to cross. The focal point of the discussion is to apply the theory to the real life. It is better to cut a long story short, providing a personal example, than ramble around theory and pad your answer with meaningless words. You can pass the test answering ABC but fail when it comes to practice. Step 7: Publish your post on time Each and every post or comment should be made on time. If you are asked to start with posting and only then move on to making responses, do it in the required way. First post and only then take your time to respond to the appealing post. The worst thing that might happen to you is the professor who found out that you had failed to meet such an easy requirement. Do it properly and start an intense yet reasoned discussion. You may get additional points for that.

Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 148

Assignment Example There 155 units are supplied to the market at that price. Results are shown in the table in Q.2 An increase in demand as a result of a decrease in prices without a corresponding change in supply will push the demand curve upwards and hence result to a shift of the demand curve to the right, that is, from D to D2. An increase in prices will reduce the consumer’s purchasing power and hence shift the demand curve downwards to the left; from D to D1 as shown by the arrows. An increase in prices will result to an increase in supply and this shifts the supply curve to the right from S to S2. A decrease in prices decreases supply shifting the supply curve to the left from S to S1. The shift is shown by the arrows, demand remains constant. The equilibrium moves to the left incase of a decrease in supply and to the right in case of an increase in supply. An increase in both supply and demand will expand the market resulting in an increase in both the prices of the goods and also the quantity of goods supplied and demanded. The equilibrium shifts to the right (William 12). A decrease in both demand and supply will contract the market leading to lower prices of goods and lower quantities of goods traded. Hence the equilibrium price and quantity shifts to the left (William

Compensation and Benefits in regards to legislation Essay

Compensation and Benefits in regards to legislation - Essay Example Compensation and benefits basically are employees’ protection, but most of the workers experience deprivation. However, the government aims the development of labor group and several orders---which were conferred on this work---were enacted to achieve this. Racial discrimination is a major social issue that has a significant effect on a person’s life, especially the lives of the ones being discriminated. Even at the immediate moment, when it is said that discrimination has diminished, it is still evident in several workplaces. It is one reason why certain positions are filled only by American (White Race), and the Blacks, as well as the other races still don’t get as much opportunity. Executive Order 11246 and other labor laws were enacted to put a stop to this. Another factor that affects the labor group is gender discrimination. Most companies opt to hire men over women for the reason that women are entitled to maternity leaves. True, this may have a negative effect on companies especially with jobs that can’t wait or the ones that require daily transmission or submission of documents. Maternity leave is a paid absence, hence, the company is ordered to pay for an employer who is not even working. Choosing to hire men over women may seem practical, but it is obviously a form of discrimination and is definitely unjust for women; legislations were enacted to minimize cases of gender discrimination and other instances of unfairness: enforcement of Parts II and III of this Order. The Secretary shall adopt such rules and regulations and issue such orders as are deemed necessary and appropriate to achieve the purposes of Parts II and III of this Order. Sec. 202. Except in contracts exempted in accordance with Section 204 of this Order, all Government contracting agencies shall include in every Government contract hereafter entered into the following provisions: employment because of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. The
